The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is seeking a WWTP Maintenance Supervisor to join our team.

Under the general direction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager, the Maintenance Supervisor directs and supervises the maintenance and repair of all WWTP facilities and lift stations. This position oversees preventive and corrective maintenance activities, coordinates maintenance staff and contractors, manages parts inventory and procurement, and ensures safe and reliable operation of plant equipment and infrastructure.

The Maintenance Supervisor position follows a regular Monday through Friday schedule from 6:30a.m. to 3:00p.m. The Wastewater Treatment Plant operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; therefore, this position may require work outside normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, emergency response situations, and on-call responsibilities as operational needs dictate.

Employees are required to reside within 30 miles of the Sioux City limits, including adjoining areas in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

Special Requirements:
Must possess a valid driver's license throughout the length of employment. Must obtain an Iowa Grade 2 Wastewater Operator Certification within two (2) years of hire. Applicants holding an equivalent Grade 2 or higher certification from another state must obtain Iowa reciprocity within the same timeframe.

Minimum Required Qualification:
Two years of technical or vocational training related to the maintenance of mechanical equipment and three years of full-time work experience in mechanical maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.

Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:
Three years of supervisory experience over maintenance personnel involving work on mechanical, electrical, electro-mechanical, instrumentation and control, or electronic systems preferred.

  • Supervises and evaluates the work of a subordinate staff; effectively recommends personnel actions related to selection, performance, leaves of absence, grievances, work schedules and assignments, disciplinary procedures and administers personnel, safety and related policies and procedures.
  • Organizes, directs, schedules, and performs maintenance and repair work on all WWTP facilities and lift stations. Completes daily time records.
  • Supervises calibration of instrumentation.
  • Develops and implements predictive/preventative maintenance programs; identify innovative predictive maintenance tools and resources to maximize the effectiveness of the maintenance program.
  • Communicates with other plant staff daily to assess and coordinate the maintenance requirements and prioritize assignments.
  • Observes construction and installation of new projects, processes, and equipment.
  • Coordinates with engineers and oversees vendors and contractors performing WWTP related work.
  • Assures that all records relating to WWTP maintenance and lift stations are complete, orderly, and accessible daily.
  • Determines and controls inventory levels for all equipment and parts and complies with purchasing procedures when ordering parts, materials, and services.
  • Develops, recommends, and administers an annual budget including tracking and approving expenditures for all maintenance related components and in specifying new equipment.
  • Develops, and assists, in maintaining written procedures for the operations and maintenance of the plant.
  • Performs, ensures, and enforces all work duties and activities are in accordance with City and plant policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Makes adjustments to ensure proper operation of equipment, safety, efficiency, and quality of work performed by staff and implement needed adjustments.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance and working hours; may be required to work evenings, weekends and holiday when the interests of the employer require.
  • Prepares to deal with a variety of emergency situations.
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.

Job Knowledge : Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in mechanical, electro-mechanical, instrumentation and control, and electronic maintenance and repair of plant equipment. Considerable knowledge in the principles and practices and methods used in wastewater and sludge treatment processes and process control; thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of utility plant operating equipment; considerable knowledge of occupational hazards of wastewater utility operations and the necessary safety precautions (including confined space entry) and stray electrical currents; knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations concerning wastewater treatment. Ability to diagnose equipment and problems. Ability to organize daily tasks and assignments. Knowledge of computer software and hardware including spreadsheets, word processing and scheduling software to include a comprehensive computerized maintenance management system; SCADA equipment; lab equipment; chemical feed equipment, chemicals and emergency equipment; ability to prepare clear, concise reports and budget recommendations; ability to plan, direct and evaluate plant maintenance operations and personnel; ability to establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships; ability to evaluate and interpret engineering and other technical data.

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication : Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers (external and internal). Requires the ability to write and speak effectively with fellow employees, City officials, and the general public; read in English; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions. Requires the ability to work as a member of a team in order to accomplish tasks; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens/customers; superiors, subordinates, other City employees, contractors, and vendors; the ability to provide leadership in the implementation of the principles of work teams and process improvement; and the ability to relate to minorities, women, and other protected classes in the community at all socioeconomic levels.

Physical Requirements : The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and smell. Ability to quickly move hands, hands together with arms, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects, ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time; this involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue, ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing, ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with body, arms and/or legs.

Regularly lifts up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment : Work is typically performed inside and/or outside and includes there to be a potential for exposure to disagreeable environmental factors. Such factors included being exposed to dampness, wetness, humidity, toxic/caustic substances, grease, dirt, fumes, gasses, odors, insects, unrestrained animals, cold, heat, noise, mechanical, chemical, and electrical hazards, atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system, confined spaces, and may require the use of a respirator. The employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in certain areas of the work environment may be loud. Visits to locations within the community whose environment may be different. Travel in all types of weather extremes to perform job duties, attend training, meetings, conferences, and workshops; must be mobile and able to visit businesses within the metro area.
